Math team captures second at Libertyville
The ETHS Math Team competed in a conference competition at Libertyville, taking home second place to IMSA, the Illinois Math and Science Academy on Nov. 14.
“I think the team as a whole performed really well,” said Aly Singleton, junior. “All of the grades held their own with their competitions and gave us the points we needed to succeed.”
The team’s performance at Libertyville has placed them seventh out of the 55 teams in the North Suburban Mathematics League of Illinois (NSML) for this competition.
“This competition was focused on probability,” said Andrew Segall. “It was the second meet of the year and we have three to go. There will be one in Dec., one in Feb., and one here at ETHS, in March.”
“After taking second to IMSA in this competition, I would say that the team’s goals are to continue to be a competitor in the NSML meets and to continue to perform at the level we have been this year, with the end goal of qualifying for the state meet at regionals,” said Singleton.
According to her, the Kits seem off to a good start. Last year, Evanston finished eleventh, overall out of the 55 teams competing in their conference. This year, they took twelfth in their first meet and seventh place at this recent competition on Nov. 14.
“I think that this year we have a good chance of being top ten in the state,” said Benedict Brady, junior. “Last year, we weren’t top ten, but the team we have now, based on our early performances, has a good chance of doing better than last year.”
Brady added, “We just have to keep up the good work and bring in the points that we know we can throughout the rest of the season.”
According to Segall, one factor that may be contributing to the team’s success is the division of practice times.
“By splitting our practices, we now have students who are attending more practices each week,” he said. What this does is it offers our students to have more practice opportunities.”
Yet despite the competition in math team, Segall also commented, “Our goals are always to learn some really cool math. We want students to learn new things, and we want them to have a heck of a lot of fun doing it.”
