English 101 class offered at Oakton
Oakton Community College (OCC) is collaborating with ETHS to offer a new class to students for the first time this summer.
“This new class, English 101, will be partnered with a College Success Seminar,” said English and Reading Department Chair Scott Bramley. “English 101 will be a basic summer bridge class, and the Success Seminar will teach critical thinking, navigational skills, and other skills useful for college.”
The class, developed specifically for juniors, takes place June 16 through July 31 at OCC’s Skokie campus.
The class is free except for a $25 application fee, and financially challenged students are exempt from that fee.
“We developed this partnership with Oakton to build stronger relations with the college,” said Bramley. “A lot of students who go there, and it’ll be a really good experience for that.”
While the class will allow students to earn college credit, it won’t count towards the required eight English credits.
Thirty-three students took the placement test for the class, and 21 were eligible.
“We have students from every course level and every background,” said Bramley. “Unfortunately, students can’t sign up for the class anymore, but we hope to offer it again next summer.”

We are planning a big trip to the Journalism Educators Association conference in Philadelphia in November 2023, and any support will go towards making that trip a reality. Contributions will appear as a charge from SNOSite. Donations are NOT tax-deductible.
