Stop breaking the bank for formal
$300 is too much for a school dance.
Every year, girls and boys spend an excessive amount of money on the Spring Frosh/Soph Formal.
The cost of the ticket is small in comparison to how much money students often spend on getting ready. Expensive dresses and shoes, hair and makeup, and fake tans are just a few of the things on many girls’ minds as they prepare for Saturday’s dance. Suit and shoe rentals aren’t too cheap, either.
It is understandable that people go “all out” for dances such as prom, Ebony Ball, and Cotillion, but glamming yourself up like you’re going to a red carpet event is a little much for Formal.
It’s understandable that students want to look nice, as they don’t often get to wear formal attire.
However, spending crazy amounts of money to make yourself feel better reflects who you are as a person. Just because society pressures you to spend money on your appearance doesn’t mean that you need to.
There are better ways to go about getting ready for Formal. Instead of a spray tan, use self tanner. Buy an outfit at a thrift shop, or wear one you already own. You can keep expenses low if you do things yourself. Formal is a great time to have fun and dance – just don’t break the bank.
Your donation will support the student journalists of the Evanstonian. We are planning a big trip to the Journalism Educators Association conference in Philadelphia in November 2023, and any support will go towards making that trip a reality. Contributions will appear as a charge from SNOSite. Donations are NOT tax-deductible.
