Joker: Folie à Deux
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is a masterful and captivating movie based on the DC supervillain the Joker. The film is a musical sequel of the 2019 movie, “Joker,” continuing its thriller plot about the life of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). It shows his chaotic and criminalistic life of being the Joker in Gotham City and his recent incarceration at Arkham State Hospital, where he slowly awaits his trial.
The movie perfectly captures the emotional and complex art that is his life. The trauma, stress and triggers he faced are shown through the movie’s emotional music. The film also concentrates on Arthur’s chaotically fast connection to the love of his life, Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga). The movie portrays their love through exhilarating and dramatic scenes, making it very atmospheric. The entire movie is artistic and unique in ways that haven’t been seen before!
The musical take on the film wasn’t received well by the public but definitely did add a twist, giving the movie more connection to Arthur as a person rather than as a villain.
Piece By Piece
You have one shot to immortalize your life in film forever. How do you do it? Maybe you cast an A-List celebrity to play you or release a clothing line alongside the movie. Or you break down your life into pieces … LEGO pieces. This is the route Pharrell Williams took in his new movie “Piece by Piece.”
“Piece by Piece” excels when it’s at its most fantastical, when it lets the LEGOS take the wheel and riff off Pharrell recounting his life rather than just recreating his stories bar-for-bar. In fact, Pharrell even told the movie’s director, Morgan Neville, “I want you to make a documentary about my life, and when you finish it, I want you to throw out all the footage and do it again in LEGO.” And that’s what they did! The original live-action footage beneath the LEGO grounds the film with refreshing realism. It’s a documentary first, LEGO second.
So, why LEGO? LEGO’s head of global entertainment, Jill Wilfert, says, “The whole idea behind LEGO is its endless creativity and limitless possibility, and Pharrell really kind of embodies that,”
“Piece by Piece” is the story of ego, vision and thinking outside the box. Oh, and did I mention that it has one of the best soundtracks of the year? “Piece by Piece” is just as creative as its subject and is a blast front-to-back.
The Apprentice
The real Donald Trump’s lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to the filmmakers of this movie, and after viewing it, it’s obvious why.
In “The Apprentice,” Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) is seen as a headstrong young man who’s determined to be number one. Lawyer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong) introduces himself to Trump, eager to take advantage of his potential for his own personal gain. Following their introduction, decades of corruption and deception are created at their hands, starting with Trump’s recreation of The Commodore Hotel.
Strong and Stan are driving forces in the movie’s realism. From how he studied Trump’s mannerisms to the bodily transformation he underwent for this role, Stan’s dedication as an actor is unparalleled. Strong captivates the audience with his performance just as well as Stan does. Cohn’s mannerisms are almost duplicated in Strong’s highly accurate performance, giving him all the credit he deserves.
This movie does a good job of displaying its characters and unmasking their true intentions. Despite being a biopic, it has a creative sense about it; it’s not only an explanatory analogy of a crooked man but also incredibly innovative and highly entertaining.
The Wild Robot
“The Wild Robot,” an adventurously illustrated book trilogy written by the author Peter Brown, has recently been adapted into an emotional, cinematic movie!
Released on Sept. 27th, the DreamWorks film takes place on an unknown island where a robot by the name of Rozzum Unit 7134 finds herself waking up with no awareness of who she is, where she is or what her purpose might be. Throughout the movie, there are many emotional aspects that reel in the audience. The plot consists of an incredible story full of confusion, liveliness and chaotic action through the perspective of Rozzum Unit 7134, who slowly learns how to flourish and survive in the wilderness of her new habitat. The film does an astounding job of showing the sentimental value of Roz’s relationships with the animals she meets throughout the entire story. It also greatly matches book to movie, which nearly never plays out right in any movie.
“The Wild Robot” carries exciting characters, amazing animations and a charming plot with subtle humor, perfect for both adults and children to enjoy!
We Live In Time
Beautifully tragic, unnervingly real and incredibly shot, “We Live in Time” is not only full of sob-inducing moments but also passion and vulnerability that clenches your stomach and grips your heart in a vice.
Even though it’s a romance for the ages, it also portrays a woman who refuses to be taken for anything other than extraordinary. Her resilience is palpable despite her constant setbacks depicted throughout this hour and forty-five-minute film. While devastating, it has comedic bits in the saddest moments which blend wonderfully together.
As an audience member, you experience the highs and lows of the characters Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh) as if you’re there living with and through them. Garfield and Pugh are a charming and encapsulating dynamic duo. Their magnetic force is ever present in the ambiance of sweet and supple romance. Even in the darker moments, the love their characters feel for each other is so discernable, you can feel it.
This film truly embodies the genuineness of love and heartbreak. It perfectly illustrates that love is not linear. It progresses and it recedes; but most important of all, it blooms.
