A new hit show is out for Spider-Man fans! “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” follows Peter Parker, freshman at the school for geniuses, Midtown High School, as he gets the classic Spiderman abilities. The show is animated and in a very interesting style. It tries to scale back Spider-Man to his original cast of villains and step away from the alien-fighting, world-saving Spider-Man and lean into the “Friendly Neighborhood” aspect of the character. To reflect this more classic story, the show looks like a comic book in action. Every frame looks hand drawn and the animators use a technique called 3D Cel-Shading Animation, the art style pioneered by Sony’s 2018 hit, “Spider-Man, Into the Spider-Verse.”
The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) has been on decline in recent years and it’s very apparent, like the 2023 film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania which got a 46% on rotten tomatoes. But “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” seems to have a lot of effort put into it and so far seems like a win for Marvel and their fanbase.
However, some fans that have written reviews don’t see the show as a good representation of Spider-Man and wish the animation would be even simpler.
“I saw the first two episodes of ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.’ It’s not terrible, but it’s not that good either…This show, though entertaining at times, is overall boring in my opinion. The animation looks weird and some of the characters aren’t that interesting” wrote a user on IMDb.
While it can be easy to agree with some of their views, with a fanbase as huge as Marvel’s there will always be people who dislike it.
Overall if you enjoy Marvel and Spider-man, and also have Disney+, then the show is definitely worth a watch. The first episode could be viewed as a little slow but after a couple episodes the action you might desire will come, and the show will satisfy any need for new Spider-Man content.
