On Feb. 20th, the ETHS Jazz Band continued what many might have seen at their lobby performances during AM support with the Jazz Showcase of the big bands. The concert started with the Big Band Lab, the biggest group of the various combos.
During the songs, many members of the band got the important chance to play a solo, a time where other instruments stop and one member plays. “I think solos are a great opportunity for kids to show how good they are individually,” said freshman Frans Bakkar, a trumpet player in the Band Lab.
The audience, which consisted mostly of parents and friends, seemed to enjoy hearing the solos and were ecstatic when their kid or friend had a chance to do one of their own. Band Lab wasn’t the only section with solos though; every combo had them, and some kids really stood out with clear passion and skill.
The variety of songs during the concert was great. One highlight was the band’s performance of “I Get a Kick Out of You,” which featured vocals that took the whole performance to the next level.
“Generally we like to have different songs every concert. I’m in the Band Lab so I’m just speaking for us though.”
Each combo was able to have a different sounding couple of songs because each combo had different instruments and players.
The concert was a perfect opportunity for kids with a passion for their instrument to come out and play their best.
