This year, ETHS introduced a new gym class, Sports Officiating Certification. In this class, students can learn how to be an official in multiple sports and become certified by the Illinois High School Sports Association to officiate competitions at the high school level. This course, taught by PE teacher Frank Consiglio, replaces a previous course offered by the school, ETHS Sports Officiating, where students were unable to receive certification. ETHS Sports Officiating Certification comes at a crucial time, when there is a serious shortage of referees for high school competitions, leading to some being cancelled. We talked to Consiglio and students in the class to learn more.
