ETHS reports highest number of COVID cases seen all semester
As of Dec. 16, ETHS has implemented an “adaptive pause,” an extended period of remote learning with the goal of mitigating spiking COVID-19 cases. The adaptive pause became effective on Dec. 17 and will continue until winter break begins on Dec. 24.
The decision came as ETHS saw its largest spike in COVID-19 cases all year, with 53 cases reported on Monday, Dec. 13 and Tues, Dec. 14 alone and a total of 129 cases reported throughout the week of Dec. 17.
Additionally, throughout the week of Dec. 17, there were 143 students in quarantine, 11 staff cases and 13 staff members in quarantine. All of these numbers are significantly higher than they have been throughout the school year thus far; from Aug. 16 to Dec. 10, there had only been 52 confirmed student cases since the beginning of the school year.
This rising number mirrors Evanston’s and Illinois’ rising COVID-19 numbers, where there is a 6.6 percent positivity rate and a 7.6 percent positivity rate respectively.
The ETHS COVID Dashboard will continue to be updated weekly with relevant information regarding student and staff confirmed COVID cases as well as students and staff members in quarantine.
Your donation will support the student journalists of the Evanstonian. We are planning a big trip to the Journalism Educators Association conference in Philadelphia in November 2023, and any support will go towards making that trip a reality. Contributions will appear as a charge from SNOSite. Donations are NOT tax-deductible.
