With just twenty seconds left in the game, senior quarterback Colin Livatino found senior wide receiver Dallas Amos in the end zone to put the Kits down two. All that was needed now was to send the game to overtime with a two-point conversion. Livatino took the snap and then rolled out to his right and fired the ball to the end zone into a pack of Wildkits but it was deflected by Deerfield senior safety Harrison Erdman. The Kits fell 21-19 which eliminated them from playoff contention.
¨It’s an absolutely heartbreaking way to lose. We had a lot of success with that play in the past but it was just not meant to be today,¨ said head coach Mike Burzawa.
With four minutes left, Deerfield missed a thirty-five-yard field goal that would have sealed the game. The Kits were unable to take advantage as Colin Livatino would be picked off by defensive end Jack Berger. All the Warriors needed was one first down to effectively end the game but running back Quinn Schimanski fumbled the ball leaving and ETHS sophomore Evyn Bell was able to jump on it, giving the Kits their final chance.
¨We got a huge break with that turnover, and went on a great two-minute drill, that’s what makes the two-point play so frustrating,¨ remarked Burzawa.
After a pair of early Deerfield touchdowns, Kit’s defense was able to settle in and hold Deerfield senior quarterback Mac Jones to just 125 yards. They were also able to pick him off twice, with sophomore Justin Johnson returning one for a touchdown. While the Kits’ defense was able to put in one of their most impressive performances of the season, the same can not be said for the offense- they struggled against the blitz and were held to just 129 yards through the air.
¨We never stopped fighting, but in the end, we were simply too undisciplined,¨ Burzwawa said.
The Kits face Glenbrook North in Northbrook next week on October 18th before closing their season at home against Maine South on the 25th.
