While the seniors on ETHS’s football will be able to take away many positive memories from their high school football careers, unfortunately, their senior night game against Maine South will not be one of them, as the Kits got blown out 55-22.
The defeat means that the Kits finish the season winless at home for the first time since 2007. The Kits never really had a chance against Maine South’s stacked roster including star sophomore quarterback Jameson Purcell, who has already received offers from top schools like Auburn, Miami, and the University of Kentucky. Purcell torched the Kits defense all night long, completing deep ball after deep ball
“You have to give a lot of credit to Maine South. They are an extremely talented team and were just bigger and better than us today,” said head coach Mike Burzawa.
The Kits were able to hold the Hawks’ offense in check in the first quarter and looked to take the lead early in the second as they had the ball at the Hawks 27-yard line. However, on third down, Colin Livatino’s pass was intercepted, which effectively stunted the Kits’ momentum.
“We played really good football in the first quarter, but it didn’t matter because we weren’t able to make it reflect on the scoreboard,” commented Burzawa.
Soon after the interception, the Hawks would take the lead when Purcell connected with senior wide receiver Mason Patras in the endzone. A pair of field goals would put the Hawks up 13-0 at the break.
The teams would exchange scores in the third quarter before the wheels would firmly fall off for the Kits. The Hawks scored two touchdowns in just over 20 seconds with an 80-yard bomb to Patras, followed by a touchdown catch by senior Andrew Mullan (this followed an interception on the previous play).
“It is impossible to win football games when you play well for one quarter,” pointed out Burzawa.
The Kits’ offense was not able to get into a rhythm as Kits runners were frequently tackled in the backfield putting them behind the chains often.
Despite finishing the season a disappointing 3-6, Burzawa could not be more proud of his players.
“All of these kids are just amazing people on and off the field,” said Burzawa. “I am truly grateful to be able to work with these incredible people over the years and to me that’s all that really matters.”
